Biometric Attendance & HR Integration Engine

Hardware-to-Cloud Raw TCP/IP Socket Ingestion & Offline-Resilient Sync Daemon

Executive Overview

A mission-critical systems engineering initiative bridging physical workplace biometric hardware with cloud business systems. Designed and deployed at KeyAbroad Consultants, it eliminated legacy manual thumb-drive export workflows with automated, fault-tolerant background synchronization.

Problem Addressed

Workplace biometric attendance terminals operated on an isolated local subnet without built-in cloud webhook capabilities. Office managers were forced to physically visit terminals with USB flash drives at the end of every month, manually parse proprietary CSVs, and reconcile attendance errors in spreadsheets.

Target Users & Real Use Case

HR managers, office administrators, and payroll accounting staff.

My Role & Engineering Contributions
  • Researched and implemented the biometric device communication protocol over raw TCP/IP sockets.
  • Engineered an offline-resilient Node.js daemon running continuously on the local network gateway.
  • Created a local SQLite write-ahead transaction buffer ensuring punches are safely saved before cloud dispatch.
  • Implemented a 60-second de-bouncing deduplication algorithm handling rapid multi-scans.
  • Built automated cloud sync workers that batch-push records to PostgreSQL over TLS REST endpoints.

Key Engineering Decisions & Architectural Trade-offs

#1: Local Disk Buffer Persistence over Direct Cloud Uploads

Decision Record
Context & Constraints

Office internet connections frequently experienced brief outages and WAN dropouts; directly posting scans to cloud HTTP APIs caused lost punches.

Architectural Decision

Engineered a local SQLite write-ahead buffer on the local gateway. Punches are committed to disk before any network request is attempted.

Trade-offs Accepted

Requires running a dedicated service with local storage on the LAN, but guarantees zero punch loss even during extended internet outages.

Evidence: Validated in production architecture deployed at KeyAbroad Consultants office.

#2: 60-Second Sliding Deduplication Window

Decision Record
Context & Constraints

Employees frequently tapped twice out of habit, causing duplicate punch events that skewed automated shift calculations.

Architectural Decision

Implemented an in-memory and SQLite-backed deduplication filter that ignores identical employee ID punches within 60 seconds.

Trade-offs Accepted

If an employee legitimately checked in and out within 60 seconds (rare), the second tap is suppressed, but prevents 99% of erroneous double-records.

Evidence: Implemented in daemon event pipeline and verified in production attendance data.

#3: Raw TCP Socket Interface vs. Vendor Cloud Subscription

Decision Record
Context & Constraints

Hardware vendors sell proprietary cloud bridge software with ongoing subscription licenses.

Architectural Decision

Engineered a custom Node.js daemon communicating directly over raw TCP sockets on port 4370.

Trade-offs Accepted

Required reverse-engineering packet protocols, but saved recurring software licensing fees and yielded complete data ownership.

Evidence: Verified on physical terminals operating daily on KeyAbroad Consultants network.
Security & Reliability Controls
Hardware & Network Fault Tolerance

Local SQLite transaction queue retains all punch events indefinitely during internet outages until server acknowledgment is received.

Verification Scope:Simulated router disconnections; all queued punches verified pushed upon WAN restoration.
Input Validation & Rate Limiting

Raw socket packet checksum validation and 60-second de-bouncing window filtering out noisy sensor triggers.

Verification Scope:Tested on physical scanner devices with consecutive repeat taps.
Data Protection & Cryptography

Transmission from local gateway to cloud PostgreSQL secured via TLS REST endpoints with API secret headers.

Verification Scope:Inspected packet capture; all external WAN communication encrypted.
